The Perks of Adopting a Pet
Owning an animal takes commitment and is not a job to be taken lightly, but many find their best friend in a pet. If you are interested in adding an animal to your family, we at Hancock County Savings Bank encourage you to look at your local animal shelters and rescue groups before reaching out to a breeder.
A common reason many give for going to a breeder is that they are looking for a purebred animal. According to the Humane Society’s official website, www.humanesociety.org, 25 percent of pets in shelters are actually purebred. Pets adopted from rescues and shelters also typically cost less than those you would buy from a breeder. Adoption fees normally cover the cost of vaccinations, microchips, spay/neuter surgeries and any other extra charges the animal encounters before adoption. When buying from a breeder these would be additional costs the owner would pay after bringing the animal home.
Many individuals and families who were gifted with a pet during Christmas time find the animal is more work than they anticipated or not what they expected, therefore they take the animal to a shelter leaving them with the hopes that they will find a new home. It is for this reason that shelters see an increase in animal residency during the beginning months of the year. This is all the more reason to seek out an animal shelter first if you are ready to adopt a pet. Another great characteristic of shelters that the Humane Society’s website discusses, is that many rescue groups conduct behavioral analyses and are able to determine which animal will be the best fit for the family.
True appreciation and love can be seen in the face and personality of a rescue animal. They are grateful to have a home and second chance, away from the daily confines of a cage. These animals understand the life from which they have been saved and are full of love to give their new family.
