President’s Day is observed on Monday February 18th, 2019. This day reminds us of the importance of remembering and honoring our leaders of the past. We must remember their battles, sacrifices, love for this country, and what they did to shape it. George Washington was the first president of the United States of America serving from 1789-1797. Prior to becoming president, he served in the military, leading the American Continental Army to victory over the British in the year 1783. Washington is most often credited with being the father of the United States. Washington’s Birthday was first celebrated as a holiday in the District of Columbia in the year 1880 and deemed a federal holiday in the year 1885. The holiday was held on the anniversary of George Washington’s birth, which is February 22nd but in 1971 the date of this holiday became the third Monday in February.
This Holiday has now become known as President’s Day by many and is not only in memory and celebration of President Washington but is a day to honor all of our founding fathers; past leaders who have served as Commander and Chief, and made this country great.
Hancock County Savings Bank offices will be closed on Monday February 18th, 2019 in observance of this great nation and its leaders both past and present. Happy President’s Day!
