Financial Protection during the Holidays

The holidays are meant to be a time of joy and peace, but sadly as shopping increases during the season so does fraudulent activity. Fraudsters take advantage of the extra spending as an opportunity to attempt to gain access to bank account and debit card information.

For those looking for an extra layer of protection, our Card Valet app is available to all HCSB customers and is a wonderful source. Simply download the app, free of charge, and you can then monitor the transactions that occur on your debit card. The app also gives you the ability to turn off your card should you notice any suspicious activity.

In addition to protecting your bank account information, you should also be aware of phony websites. When you are shopping online, make sure you are confident of the source. If the website’s URL address begins with “https” this means it is a secure site; however, if the site begins with only “http” and is missing the “s” then it is unsecured and a warning sign.

It is also the time of year for giving, but some scammers create false charities in an effort to sway those with good intentions. Unbeknownst to the giver, their donation is going into the pocket of a criminal. It is always wise to research a charity before making a donation. If you cannot find a legitimate website or description, then it would be wise to donate elsewhere.

As always, if you feel uneasy about a scenario it is best to listen to your instincts, or simply call one of our customer service representatives. We are happy to walk you through any dilemma you might be facing, no matter the time of year.
