Beware of Unemployment Benefits Scam

It has recently been reported that many residents throughout the country and our tristate area are beginning to receive 1099-G tax forms, which report unemployment benefits for 2020 that the individual never applied for.

Unfortunately, not much can be done at the local level at this time, but the scam is being investigated at the state level and victims are urged to report the fraud.

Those who have been targeted can report the scam by visiting the website for their corresponding state:

  • West Virginia – reportunemploymentfraud@wv.gov
  • Ohio – unemployment.ohio.gov
  •  Pennsylvania – uc.pa.gov

To talk to someone on the phone, call the following numbers:

  • West Virginia – 681-313-2711
  • Ohio – ODJFS at 877-644-6562
  • Pennsylvania – 1-800-692-7469

By receiving one of these fraudulent filings you should assume you have been a victim of identity theft and file alerts with the three major credit agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

As always, if you have any other questions or concerns regarding this scam or other fraudulent activity related to your accounts or identity, we are here for you.  Please call us at 304-387-1620
